STM Unveils the National Autonomous Underwater Vehicle “STM NETA” at SAHA EXPO
STM, Turkey’s leading engineering force in maritime defense, has introduced its domestically developed Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) “STM NETA” for the first time at the SAHA EXPO 2024. Designed to detect underwater mines, STM NETA is a key innovation developed entirely with STM’s own resources, marking a significant advancement for both military and civilian applications. The unveiling was attended by the President of Defense Industries, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz, and numerous visitors.
STM NETA 300: The First Mission—Mine Detection
STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz emphasized that STM NETA is designed to serve both the Turkish Navy and allied nations. “The evolving battlefield shows the increasing importance of unmanned aerial and maritime platforms. STM NETA 300 will detect, classify, and identify underwater mines, demonstrating our commitment to autonomous defense technologies. This vehicle, with its modular design and high level of autonomy, will meet both military and civilian needs,” Güleryüz explained.
Broad Civilian and Military Applications
The STM NETA 300 can perform various military missions such as reconnaissance, surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and explosive ordnance disposal. On the civilian side, it is designed for tasks such as pipeline inspections, geophysical research, and search-and-rescue operations. Capable of operating at depths of up to 300 meters, this national asset can work for up to 24 hours and reach speeds of 5 knots. Its compact design allows it to be transported by just two people.
Enhancing Deterrence in the Blue Homeland
Güleryüz announced that the STM NETA family will be expanded to include medium and large-class underwater vehicles capable of deeper operations. “The STM NETA family will play a critical role in safeguarding the depths of the Blue Homeland, enhancing our deterrence,” he added, highlighting the export potential of these technologies for allied nations.
Equipped with Advanced Technology
STM NETA 300 is equipped with side-scan sonar and gap-filler sonar, allowing it to conduct comprehensive scans in mine-threatened waters. Its advanced sensors provide precise data for detecting underwater wrecks and targets. The vehicle also offers a synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) integration option, enabling wider area scanning with higher horizontal resolution. These features make STM NETA 300 a critical tool for both military and civilian operations, further strengthening Turkey’s maritime capabilities.
With this innovative technology, STM is taking a significant step in bolstering Turkey’s dominance in the Blue Homeland, enhancing its deterrence and protection of national maritime interests.
